Application for a management position

You have clicked on this blog post which probably means you are going to apply for a leadership position. When applying for your dream job as a manager, there are some things you need to pay extra attention to. Read more below and get our best advice for an application to a position as manager.

Consider: Why am I applying for this position?

When applying for a position as a manager, it is important that you think about what your motivation for applying for the job is. It could be that you want new challenges in a position similar to a managerial position you have held in another company or that you would like to move up from a regular employee position to a position with more responsibility.

This motivation to apply for the job must be reflected in your application. Both your personal motivation – but maybe also because it is a really exciting company you are applying for a management position in.

Highlight your competencies as a manager

As for any application and for any resume it’s paramount that you highlight your competencies – what are you specifically good at? And which of your competencies match what the company is looking for in a manager?

Say you’re applying for a job as Head of Sales it would be fitting to include in your application that you have sales experience and optionally management experience from other companies. Perhaps it would be a good idea to highlight that you have skills concerning delegating tasks, keeping the long view in the room and always considering the results of the company.

Highlight your results as a manager

As we have already mentioned, it is important that you highlight your previous results from any other management positions or from various positions you have been in whose results could be relevant to the position you are applying for.

It could be that at your old workplace you initiated the launch of a new product or that you achieved some good results in your department.

Your personality is important too

Yes, results and competencies are incredibly important when a company hires a new manager. But that’s not all! Personality is just as crucial to whether you are eligible for the job interview.

Since your application should help you on your way to the job interview, the application should reflect your personality as much as possible at all. Play with the language and express your personality that way.

One of the sections of your application should address your professional and personal competencies. Here you can put some words on how you are as a person and what you appreciate in the form of a new workplace (e.g. the social aspect or an open work culture).
